Miraggio. 1911–1993. Memorie di un nonno aviatore gathers the autobiographical memoirs of Michele Miraglia, an engine mechanic in the Italian Air Force, brought to print through the editorial work of his grandson Marco Miraglia. From a peasant childhood in Apulia in the 1910s to the Spanish Civil War with the Aviazione Legionaria, from the embarkations aboard the cruiser Trieste during the Second World War to the long postwar service across Taranto, Venice and Treviso.

Così, salutammo gli amici e i nostri superiori, ci presentammo al colonnello e gli chiedemmo una sua foto con dedica, lo ringraziammo molto e ci abbracciammo, lui ci disse che se gli volevamo scrivere lui sarebbe stato ad Addis Ababa, in Africa. Qualche settimana più tardi venimmo a sapere che era morto bruciato in un aereo. (…)»

The original text — composed by Michele in his final years as a collection of “Episodes” intended for his children and grandchildren — is supplemented with historiographic notes, narrative bridges and a family photographic archive, delivering at once the intimate portrait of a simple man and the fresco of an Italy passing through fascism, war and reconstruction.
